About ABC Autism Connection
Hello!! My name is Tonya Dawson and I have been interested in children with differing abilities from a very early age. In day care while other children were running around the playground, I was playing "mother hen" to a child who was deaf and making sure she had a friend. Growing up with that early experience, I knew I wanted to enable children with different abilities to achieve their dreams. After graduating from Texas A&M Kingsville with a degree in Psychology in 1995, I became certified to teach all levels of special education in 1997. In my second year of teaching, I worked with a child with autism that touched my heart and left me searching for interventions specifically for children with autism. After many years of working with children with various diagnoses, I found some answers in Applied Behavior Analysis. I have been using research based ABA methods for the past 16 years and the social and communicational gains children have made in the program are incredible. After seeing ABA in action in my classroom, I decided to pursue a Masters of Education in counseling, allowing me to complete the courses required to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. I received my BCBA in March of 2012. While teaching in the public school system for Killeen ISD was a wonderfully rewarding experience, I believe that I can better serve children outside of the school setting, using a scientifically validated approach to teaching. I am dedicated to helping your child succeed in all environments.
