About ABC Autism Connection
Hello!! My name is Tonya Dawson and I have been interested in children with differing abilities from a very early age. In day care while other children were running around the playground, I was playing "mother hen" to a child who was deaf and making sure she had a friend. Growing up with that early experience, I knew I wanted to enable children with different abilities to achieve their dreams. After graduating from Texas A&M Kingsville with a degree in Psychology in 1995, I became certified to teach all levels of special education in 1997. In my second year of teaching, I worked with a child with autism that touched my heart and left me searching for interventions specifically for children with autism. After many years of working with children with various diagnoses, I found some answers in Applied Behavior Analysis. I have been using research based ABA methods for the past 9 years and the social and communicational gains children have made in the program are incredible. After seeing ABA in action in my classroom, I decided to pursue a Masters of Education in counseling, allowing me to complete the courses required to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. I received my BCBA in March of 2012. While teaching in the public school system for Killeen ISD was a wonderfully rewarding experience, I believe that I can better serve children outside of the school setting, using a scientifically validated approach to teaching. I am dedicated to helping your child succeed in all environments.
